This Way to the Waterfall

Fay and I as always were craving fresh air and a chaotic hike. Luckily Fallingwater Cascades Trail, tucked right off the Blue Ridge Parkway was a close enough hike. This short but mighty loop promised a scenic waterfall and it definitely delivered.

As always, we found this trail on AllTrails App, and the pictures didn’t lie. It was peaceful and exactly the reset we needed... until the uphill nearly killed us (but we’ll get to that).

First Steps Into the Woods

We started from the parking area and decided to go right at the loop fork. BIG MISTAKE! If you're looking for a challenge, this is the move. The trail takes you gradually downhill first, winding through rocks, shaded paths, and the perfect sound of nature. Honestly? Dreamy.

The View from the Falls

The waterfall itself? Beautiful!! It’s was one of those moments where you just have to stop and breathe it in… which is exactly what we did.

We took a break there and Appa, (Toni’s Rottie Baby) enjoyed jumping in the water and splashing us girlies. Appa was in heaven.

That is, until we had to cross the actual waterfall to get to the other side.

Crossing the waterfall to continue the trail…. let’s just say, Appa was NOT having it. One look at distance between the rocks and our boy froze. We ended up carrying our 100 lb Rottie across a few rocks like he was a princess. Our backs still hurts from that lifting!

Fun Fact: While the main cascade steals the spotlight, the trail is dotted with gentle falls and sculpted rocks that follow the stream’s path.

The Final Stretch = Pain & Glory

Okay, the last part of this loop? Whew. STRAIGHT UP. We were wheezing, sweating, gasping! I can’t tell you how many breaks we had. A three hour hike turned into four!

Appa, just like us, was done with the hike and us. He was ready to go home.

Pro tip: If you want to end at the waterfall, go left at the fork instead. The climb out is steep either way, but at least you’ll have the best view saved for last and won’t have to die getting back to your car!

Tips & Trail Notes

  • Best time to go: Spring through early fall, ideally before noon for the soft light at the falls.

  • Trail length: 1.4-mile loop. Moderate difficulty.

  • Parking: Free, right off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

  • What to bring: Water, good shoes, and maybe a towel if your pup loves a splash.

  • Dog-friendly? Yes! Just make sure they’re okay crossing water or that you’re okay carrying them.

We’d totally come back, especially for the waterfall view and the forest vibes!

Final Thoughts

Whether you're a Virginia local or just road-tripping the Parkway, this trail is worth it. It’s got everything: waterfall views, forest peace, and a little bit of chaos to keep things interesting.

Plus, it gave us stories we’ll laugh about for a while. Like Appa’s dramatic refusal to cross running water.
