The Start of a Fun Journey

As usual, we needed a breath of fresh air and a spontaneous trip to Smith Mountain Lake gave us just that.

It was one of those “let’s just go somewhere close by” weekends. No big plan. Just the need to be outside and maybe explore somewhere new. We are close by Smith Mountain Lake and found Turtle Island Trail on AllTrails which states that it was short, simple, and with lake views. That was enough for us. It ended up being exactly what we needed

First Steps on the Trail

We parked inside Smith Mountain Lake State Park ($7 day-use fee or season passes, heads up!) and made our way to the trailhead. This wasn’t a big hike by any means. It was more like a scenic stroll, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think or in our case each other talk.

One thing that truly caught our eyes were the numerous facts on the trees that told you what kind of tree they were. It was a nature lesson we truly enjoyed.

The path winds gently through the trees and leads you to a charming little wooden bridge that crosses over to none other than Turtle Island. Yup, a real island. Small, sweet, and surrounded by calm lake water.

Benches, Bridges & Bliss

What stood out the most? The vibe and the beauty. This place is peaceful in the best way. There are benches placed perfectly for taking in the lake.

We found some flat rocks in the water and couldn't resist hopping across a few. It was like a mini adventure with zero stress. No rushing. Just stillness and a soft breeze through the trees.

It was just us. Toni and Fay, two best friends on this little outing. Sometimes that’s all you need.
